Bald is Beautiful: A letter for a fabulous girl

Title: Bald is Beautiful: A letter for a fabulous girl
Author: Carola Schmidt
Illustrator: Dian Ovieta
Genre: Children’s picture book
Pages: 27 Pages
Ages: 4 and up

Recently a good friend was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her upbeat can do attitude never wavered, a factor, I am sure in the long run, as she finally achieved remission. Even so losing her hair was a huge hurdle for her. Eventually she chose to remove it herself rather than watch it fall out bit by bit. She was self conscience even around those she was closest to, and we were never able to completely reassure that she was as beautiful to us as always, even without her flowing locks. Despite the fact that she was a grown woman, I would have loved to gift her this book. Its message is sweet and clear. Life has its ups and downs but that doesn’t change who you are. Some days are going to be harder than others and you are definitely going to need to process the changes in your life. Find your inner peace, accept it, but don’t give in to it, through it all you are loved.

I never knew about scarf and hat shower parties before. It seems a brilliant way to take charge of the change in life and share it with those you love. Because isn’t everything better when you share it with someone you love? I feel that this book isn’t just a great gift for a girl or woman going through the cancer process, but also for anyone in her life that is sharing that journey with her. I would also suggest that this book would be useful for helping to deal the reality of any type of hair loss condition.
